You may recognize Ellen and Ione Rucker from their WE tv reality show, Love Thy Sister. Known for their fun loving personalities and family above everything attitudes, these sisters are taking the natural hair care space by storm with their heat friendly products. They’ve relaunched their popular brand, Rucker Roots, to fulfill a life long passion to help women feel good about themselves through proper hair care. The Rucker sisters shared what it’s like working with family and their must have for maintaining work/life balance.

Who are the Rucker sisters?
The Rucker sisters are Ellen and Ione Rucker, the last two children born to Douglas and Ruby Rucker of Lancaster, South Carolina. Ellen is a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill and Life University School of Chiropractic Medicine. Ellen had a successful private chiropractic practice for over 12 years before starting Rucker Roots. Ellen has a 12-year-old daughter, Kai Carter and is married to Bakari Sellers. Ione is a graduate of Spelman College and Converse College with a Masters in Education. Ione started the Rucker Education Scholarship Fund in 2014 to help students from her hometown attend college. She is the mother of 3 kids:  Kathryn, AJ and Rucker Jamison.

Tell us a little bit about Rucker Roots. With the natural hair care space becoming saturated, what makes your products stand out from competition. 
Rucker Roots is a natural hair care line formulated with the goal of providing premium products using natural ingredients. Rucker Roots products have carrot, turnip, and ginger root oils to help promote healthy, growing hair. Rucker Roots is for all hair types and textures- natural, relaxed, color-treated, fine to curly, which makes our products stand out from other hair products.

What inspired you to relaunch Rucker Roots? 
We were inspired to relaunch Rucker Roots because it was truly our passion.  We love being able to provide products to people that truly are good for not just your hair but are healthy products in general. Rucker Roots products have helped so many people feel their best by looking good on the outside. We have seen mothers cry happy tears when they use our products on their babies’ hair and it just pushes us even more!

How has working with family benefitted your business?
We are not only sisters, but also best friends.  We talk constantly and live near each other. We know each other’s strengths and weaknesses and we balance each other very well. We do argue and fight, but at the end of the day we trust and respect each other so that truly benefits Rucker Roots.

As mothers and entrepreneurs, what is your one must have to maintain work/life balance?
As mothers and entrepreneurs our one must have to maintain work/life balance is our faith.  We have a strong faith in God and his plan, trusting in Him to guide us through our lives both personally and professionally.

With busy schedules and multiple roles, how do you make yourself a priority? What are some things you do to put yourself first? 
We both carve out at least an hour everyday to take time for ourselves. Whether, it’s early morning meditation, a massage, acupuncture, yoga, a walk, or a manicure. Some days we don’t get but 30 minutes, being busy mothers with active children and entrepreneurs, but it is essential to try to make time for ourselves.
